Venus de Milo Ashtray

Sep 16, 2024 | Museum Monday Treasures

Today’s Museum Monday treasure from the Museum of American Glass in WV is a rather unexpected ashtray. At first glance this ebony ashtray with a satin replica of the Venus de Milo might appear to be foreign. But, in fact, it has a very faded foil label on the bottom: “OnIzed [printed over the Owens Illinois diamond trademark] / OWENS-ILLINOIS / GLASS COMPANY.” I think it can be assumed that this would have been made around 1935 when Owens-Illinois bought the Libbey Glass Company and began production of a line of Art Deco art glass.
