Pairpoint Corporation’s No. B-1627 Candlestick

Feb 24, 2025 | Museum Monday Treasures

Today’s Museum Monday treasure from the Museum of American Glass in WV is a candlestick. In case there is anyone who cannot immediately guess who made this candlestick, the “giveaway” clue is the characteristic controlled bubble ball connector on the stem. This is Pairpoint Corporation’s No. B-1627 candlestick from the 1920s. It is 9” high, with a ground and polished pontil on the bottom.

This controlled bubble ball connector was used extensively by Pairpoint on a variety of footed bowls, vases, and other pieces. The No. B-366 comport in amber quite likely was designed to match the No. B-1627 candlestick. It is 7” high, with a diameter of 8”.

The most recognizable of the Pairpoint “ballstem” candlesticks is the pair seen in amethyst. These are No. F-1623 and are 10” high.

And perhaps the most spectacular of the pieces in MAG’s collection with the ball connectors is the No. B-1485 vase in ruby see in the next photograph. It is an amazing 13 ¼” high with a diameter at the top of 6 1/8”.

A very similar vase, somewhat smaller, but just as elegant, is the No. B-1083 in all crystal. It is also quite imposing at 12” high with a top diameter of 6 1/8”.

And, finally, the footed bowl seen in the final photograph is a form that to date has not been documented, but not only has the familiar controlled bubble ball connector, but is also decorated with Pairpoint’s Grape Design engraving. It is 7” high and 11 7/8” in diameter. Pairpoint was a master of craftsmanship and stands in the top echelon of manufacturers of elegant glassware in the United States.
